Mystic Seminar | 08.01.2011

1 Pictures / 6 Comments

Erin and I have been invited to speak at next January’s Mystic Seminar and we’re asking for your help with our presentation.

Since this will be my third time presenting at Mystic, Erin and I don’t want to repeat ourselves. We want to make sure what we say is relevant and helpful to everyone there, so our presentation will be based off questions you give us beforehand. This will give us a chance to prepare for each request in detail. So if you’ve got something you want to know, please tell us!  You can write a comment on the blog here, post a question on our Facebook page or fill out our contact link above. We’ll be an open book for you.

Mystic started as a small meeting around a table with a few friends but has turned into a three-day event with some of the biggest names in the wedding photography world, including Joe Bussink, Jerry Ghionis, Susan Stripling, DQ Studios and many, many other great talents. We can’t wait to get back to Mystic and see all our old friends and meet a lot of new ones.

And please, don’t hold back with your questions. We want this to be our best presentation we’ve ever done, but we can’t do it without your help!

What's the process of client interaction pre/post booking? Anything amazing to blow their minds?

When you arrive at a new place, how much location scouting/conceptualizing do you do prior to a shoot vs. shooting more on the fly? My hubs and I have been wondering this about your work for some time now!

Thanks Jashim and Becca! Great questions, and we say a lot about both at Mystic.

I can't figure out how you get such amazing "dance" shots at receptions. How do you do it? What lenses? (35mm prime?) How do you balance the DJ's lights with your flash?.... on cam -vs- off cam?....ETTL -vs- Manual???? thanks!!! See ya at the Mystic -Mark

Workshops 2011 | 06.13.2011

1 Pictures / 8 Comments

We are very, very excited to announce two new workshops for this Summer and Fall. We’re teaming up with two of our favorite studios, DQ and Wirken Photography, for two very different experiences.

The first will be our Love + Light Workshop in New York City with Dave and Quin Cheung of DQ Studios on Wednesday, Aug. 10th. This one-day workshop will be a nonstop shootout in the streets of New York focusing on what we individually do best: flash (DQ) and ambient (Chrismans). You’ll spend half the day with DQ learning their flash magic and the other half with us where we’ll show you how to find the unexpected in even the most typical places. We’ll have a real couple that is really in love and a big dinner at the end. This workshop is for the photographer that is happy with their business, but wants a new perspective when it comes to finding real moments and epic portraits with fresh eyes.

The second workshop will be with Tyler Wirken for his Wirkshop Series at his studio in Kansas City on Sept. 27-28th. Tyler is one of the best documentary wedding photography teachers in the country. We’ve known him for several years, and have taught alongside him at the Foundation Workshop. At the two-day Wirkshop, we will tackle all angles of photographing a wedding – from learning how to be patient for the moment to creating a beautiful portrait in difficult lighting. We’re also going to be looking at how to improve your business even in this challenging economy. We’ll discuss your photographs, your Web site, your branding, your price sheet and everything else you show to clients to help you figure out how to make all those things better. If you’re looking for a workshop that will be an instant shot of adrenaline for your career, this is it.

We could not happier with what we have in store for those who decide to join us. Erin and I have taught – and been students at – workshops all over the world. We know how workshops have changed our lives and careers, and we’re going to do everything we can to make sure that happens for you as well.

See you in the Big Apple or Kansas City!

Both of these workshops will be spectacular. I attend B+Es beach house workshop and learned almost more than my little self could even take. DQ are mad talented, top-notch in all they do, and so, so kind. They have a ninja-couture style that is, well, the coolest. Tyler is almost miraculous in the shots he captures and is one of the best photojournalistic teachers I have ever encountered. Really, he is. Sign up! You will be better for it!

Stop thinking about it and just sign up as fast as you can. Ben's workshop was the best damn investment we've ever made in our business and will totally change your life. So much to learn, at the end you'll feel like a new photographer. I wish I could hype it more but there aren't words to describe. :)

Ben & Erin worked tirelessly at the NC workshop!! I've been to a lot of workshops in the past, but none where the instructors cared so much about making us better photographers!!

(06.13.2011)

Melissa McClure

Oh wow these sound amazing!! I took the Ben Chrisman workshop last Sept and it was absolutely worth every penny! I learned so much about business, photography and myself. Plus Ben and Erin are awesome people to hang with!

Selur Nokin

I don't want anyone in my area going to this. After you learn what everyone else does not know you will be amazed at your unique thought process behind the camera and the business secrets that will change your life.

you'll walk in a photographer and walk out a professional. i can't speak highly enough how invaluable their workshops are. the nc workshop literally changed me--can't thank ben and erin enough. they're the real deal.

(06.17.2011)

Robin Parrott

Ben! I would so love that lighting workshop. But, lol, no such money. Your use of flash now is fantastic and I want to learn more. It is where I struggle the most. And always your ambient shots are stunning! You inspire a lot of my work.

Beach House workshop | 10.05.2010

The Outer Banks, N.C., is known for its beautiful beaches and sunny blue skies. So when we planned our Beach House Workshop for late September, we were envisioning everyone getting some beach time in, as well as a few dips in the pool and hot tub at the house we rented in the town of Duck. Instead, we were given torrential rain and thick, dark-gray clouds for the entire three days. What that meant though, is we just worked even harder on photography. We liked the challenge of demonstrating how to shoot creative portraits without any sun – especially at a beach location. And instead of hanging by the pool, we stayed inside late into the night, going over everyone’s websites and blogs, pricing, marketing and anything else that came to mind. And of course, we did manage to squeeze in a good dance party after several bottles of wine on the first night.

We were so impressed with the caliber of the photographers at this workshop and loved getting a chance to have some good bonding time with everyone. We were also joined by three great friends, filmmaker and photographer Vlad Chaloupka, and photographers David Murray and Kirsten Lewis. Vlad filmed the workshop, and David and Kirsten helped with critiques while also cooking every fantastic meal from scratch all three days. It was the perfect workshop for us, with everyone together like a big family talking about what we love the most, taking pictures.

Beach House SOLD OUT! | 04.04.2010

3 Pictures / 14 Comments

UPDATE: We are SOLD OUT. Thank you to everyone who signed up. Your trust means everything to us, and we’re going to do everything we can to make this the best learning experience you have ever had.

After working on this for months, we are finally ready to announce our first, and most likely only, workshop in the United States this year.

We chose a beautiful house on the beach in the Outer Banks, North Carolina, so we can all be under one roof the entire time. We love being completely consumed by photography, and this it the best way to do it – without distractions or reasons to go anywhere else. We have so much planned, we have no idea how we are going to fit it all in, including special guests and lots of shooting time. Sound fun?
