Words and photos by Mauricio Arias

Jeni and Dave chose the iconic Palace of Fine Arts for their February wedding in San Francisco.

They got a rare sunny day in this notoriously foggy, overcast city. But they also got wind. Lots of it. As the wind repeatedly lifted Jeni’s veil up and, sometimes, completely off of her head, everyone laughed and shared these lighthearted moments together.

Jeni was a great sport for our creative portraits after the ceremony, not even hesitating to run up to the top of one of the historic structures in her long, flowing gown and bare feet.

We then returned to the Ritz-Carlton to feast and dance with the new couple’s closest family and friends.

Congratulations Jeni and Dave – I wish you all the happiness in the world!

Mauricio- excellent blend of playing with light and framing and sincere heartwarming moments. I especially love the ceremony shots where they are looking at eachother with the priest on the right, and the windy ceremony shot- your decision to keep just the number of people in it that you did was perfect!

As a kid, I habitually checked our mailbox, hoping to find the latest issue of American PHOTO. It was the only source for pictures of scantily-clad ladies allowed in our household – a coveted item for a pre-teen in the pre-Internet era. Of course, the articles told me nothing about the statuesque nudes depicted or how to woo them – just technical details about cameras and lighting.

Unwittingly, I developed an understanding of photography.

Twenty-five years later, it feels like life coming full circle to see my own photos featured in the magazine, yet I’m still just as clueless as I was back then about wooing women.

To the editors at American PHOTO, past and present: thanks for giving me such generous exposure. To my Dad, an amateur photographer who first introduced me to the medium: sorry for tearing the Cindy Crawford pictures out of your magazine.

Marguerite and Ryan | 04.17.2012

(words by erin)

When they had finally made it to the altar together, after Marguerite’s tearful walk down the aisle with her father, Ryan instinctually kissed her on the cheek, causing everyone to giggle and the minister to joke “Now that’s not supposed to happen until later.” Ryan kissed her again after he put her ring on her finger, and at least one more time, before the “official” first kiss. Ryan later told Marguerite he knew she was nervous and emotional and just wanted to comfort her. As he told her this, she nodded knowingly. This is just how Ryan is. To me, it represented how perfectly in sync these two are.

In the limo, on the way to the reception, Ryan launched into all these funny stories from his getting-ready time with the guys. It was obvious that Marguerite is the first person he wants to tell when something interesting happens, and he couldn’t wait to catch her up on everything that had happened during their hours apart.

These two also have a serene peacefulness about them when they are together – it’s the look that people have when they know everything is right in their world, and that they have made the right decisions about the kind of person they want to be, and the kind of person they want to be with.  It’s an inspiring thing to witness.

After the ceremony, as we were posing and adjusting Ryan and Marguerite for portraits, they both had such huge, joyful smiles on their faces, even between shots. It was obvious it wasn’t just for our cameras. I said to Marguerite, “You look so happy.” And she looked over at her new husband, squeezed his hand, and said, more to him than to me, “I am happy.”

(Thank you to Mauricio Arias for joining us at the wedding. Several of the photos are his.)

E’Lane and Baker | 04.02.2012

34 Pictures / 19 Comments

(words by erin)

Ever since Ben photographed E’Lane’s big sister Vicki’s wedding to Jacob in 2007, we have been very close to the Bobo family. We have visited them on the holidays, met up with them in Natchez and New Orleans, and spent several Thanksgivings with them. So when E’Lane asked us to photograph her wedding to her high-school sweetheart, Baker, we felt more like we were being invited to a good friend’s wedding.

Except for the small caveat that we were expected to actually work at this friend’s wedding. Which was fine by us, as E’Lane is one of the most beautiful and photogenic girls we’ve ever photographed. And her wedding would take us to New Orleans. It’s no secret that New Orleans is one of our favorite cities in the world. We jump at every opportunity to shoot there.

E’Lane and Baker started the weekend off with a rehearsal dinner at the famous ACME Oyster House, followed by an insanely fun after-party at the Ritz-Carlton’s Davenport Lounge, where the champagne seemed endless and everyone danced to the Davenport’s resident jazz band. It was a very classic New Orleans evening, and we were so thrilled to be a part of it all.

The candlelit wedding ceremony was held after sundown in the courtyard of the Montegut House. For the reception, everyone was treated to delicious creole dishes created by famous Louisiana chef John Besh. Since E’Lane is a pastry chef, the traditional wedding cake was foregone in exchange for a tower of brightly colored macaroons. At the end of the night, the happy newlyweds escaped on a pedicab into the chilly New Orleans night.

E’Lane and Baker, and of course the wonderful Bobo clan, thank you so much for letting us be a part of the family and continue to photograph your lives! We hope to see you at many more get-togethers, celebrations and milestones.
